
Can I use H&R Block 2009 software to do my 2010 taxes?
I have H&R Block At Home Basic 2009 installed on my laptop. I was wondering if I can file my 2010 taxes with this or do I have to buy the updated 2010 software?
No. Tax laws change from year to year. For one thing, the standard deduction is higher this year, so that would cost you lost refund money. Secondly, some laws that were in effect last year have expired, like exempting the first $2,400 of unemployment payments. If that pertained to you, you would be filing a false return because the old Tax Software would exempt your unemployment payments.
You need to use updated software. If you have a simple return, like just your W-2 forms, then you can do it for FREE with TurboTax on their web site and even file electronically for free:
