How to play a video file with .DAT extension?

I have copied a video from a DVD-R CD onto my hard disk. The file has got .DAT extension. When I insert the DVD, it automatically starts playing with ‘Power Cinema’ software. But when I click the copied file in my hard disk, it does not play. What could be the reason and how can I play the file from my hard disk. Could anybody explain ?? I would be grateful.

So many ways, simple way is

1) Open windows media player, and drag the dat file into it. It will play.

2) Permanant Solution: If ur using windowsXP/2000 then rightclick on the file -> select “openwith -> Choose program” (sometimes just openwith). A choose program window will be opened.

select “windows media player” and select “always use selected program to open” checkbox and click ok.

After this if u dblclick the .dat file, it will be opened automatically in windows media player.

3) simply download VLC player virtually plays all files from “www.videolan.org” and use above techniquies
